Background
The Safety Department recently undertook work for a nationwide retail refurbishment project for a prominent high-street brand. This presented unique challenges, as the design team was based overseas and not subject to UK CDM regulations.
Our Role and Actions
As both Principal Designer under CDM and Building Regulations, The Safety Department provided comprehensive oversight of the design and construction process:
- Design Compliance: We conducted rigorous reviews of all designs to ensure they met UK Building Regulations and health and safety standards.
- Workshops with Designers: Collaborative workshops were held with overseas and UK-based designers to address compliance issues and streamline the approval process.
- Resolving Compliance Issues: During site inspections, we identified the use of plastic piping, which contravened building regulations requiring copper piping. This issue was promptly resolved through engagement with building control, ensuring compliance and safety.

By combining the responsibilities of Principal Designer under both CDM and Building Regulations, The Safety Department reduced delays, minimised compliance risks, and provided a seamless experience for the client. This integrated approach ensured all preconstruction procedures were effectively communicated and executed.
