As the Managing Director of The Safety Department Ltd – Risk Management Consultants, I am proud to announce that this month we have chosen to sponsor the annual inter-company boxing tournament for junior soldiers at the Army Foundation College Harrogate. This event provides a unique opportunity for young people to challenge themselves, develop their skills, and prepare themselves for the challenges which lie ahead in their military career, and then later in civilian life.
Having served myself as a Junior solider in the Junior Leaders Regiment Royal Engineers (JLRRE) back in 1988 I believe that this is a cause very much worth supporting. The grounding and discipline I learned as a young 16-year-old during my 12 months as a Junior Solider provided me with the character, fortitude, and courage upon which I have relied throughout my life.
At The Safety Department, we believe that young people should be exposed to risk in a controlled environment. When assessing risk, we must consider the value of high-risk play and the educational benefit derived from such pursuits. This exposure helps young people to develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to succeed in life and in their careers. By participating in this event, young soldiers have the opportunity to push themselves to their limits and to grow both physically and mentally.
